Computing

We understand that computing is an essential skill for children to thrive in today’s digital world. At Radwinter, our computing curriculum is thoughtfully designed to prepare every child to embrace life in all its fullness by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate and create within an ever-changing technological landscape.

What Will Children Learn?

Our computing curriculum is built around three key areas:

  • Information Technology
  • Digital Literacy
  • Computer Science

We use a blend of cross-curricular and discrete teaching approaches to ensure children gain a deep, knowledge-rich understanding while applying their learning creatively. Technology is not only a tool for learning but also a gateway for children to express themselves, solve problems, and collaborate. We recognise the important role technology plays in making learning accessible for all children, including those with additional needs.

Our curriculum is carefully balanced to build children’s skills progressively, enabling them to become confident and skilful computer scientists who enjoy discovering the possibilities technology offers.

How Will Children Be Taught?

Computing at Radwinter CofE Primary School is integrated throughout the school day and curriculum:

  • Information technology and digital literacy are embedded across subjects to make communication and publication purposeful and meaningful.
  • We combine plugged (using devices) and unplugged (offline, hands-on) learning opportunities to ensure children understand the theory underpinning computing, not just the ‘how’ but the ‘why’.
  • Through discrete lessons focused on computer science, children develop strong problem-solving skills and gain knowledge that opens up the creative potential of the digital world.

We continually invest in resources to enrich learning. Currently, our children have access to:

  • 20 iPads with internet connectivity
  • 40 laptops recently provided by our PTA

We use the Teach Computing platform to deliver our computing units, which offers a broad and deep curriculum that fosters problem-solving and creativity. Additionally, online safety is a key part of our PSHRE curriculum, revisited regularly to ensure children navigate the digital world securely and responsibly.

What Will Outcomes for Children Be?

At Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School, we want every child to find joy and purpose in computing. Our approach encourages curiosity through ‘why’ and ‘how’ questioning, enabling children to articulate their understanding and demonstrate creativity confidently.

  • Knowledge and vocabulary are assessed at the start of each unit and revisited throughout lessons to reinforce learning and deepen understanding.
  • This approach helps teachers identify what needs to be taught and where children can explore concepts at a greater depth.
  • Ultimately, children develop the skills and wisdom to use technology in a balanced way that supports a healthy lifestyle.

Our curriculum reflects our Christian values of fairness, kindness, respect, and service, guiding children to use technology ethically and thoughtfully. We nurture a secure, happy environment where every child feels valued and encouraged to flourish as a unique learner.

Embracing Our Vision Through Computing

Our vision, “Growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness” (John 10:10), is at the heart of our computing curriculum. We believe that technology can inspire awe and wonder, opening doors to new ideas and connections beyond our rural village. Through computing, children learn to look upwards, outwards, and inwards—drawing on our values to guide their journey as responsible digital citizens.

How You Can Support Your Child’s Computing Journey

  • Encourage conversations about what your child is learning in computing. Ask them “How did you solve that problem?” or “What new thing did you create today?”
  • Talk about the importance of balancing screen time with other activities to maintain wellbeing.
  • Explore online safety together, reinforcing the messages they learn in school.

Summary

At Radwinter CofE (VA) Primary School, computing education goes beyond teaching skills; it is about inspiring children to embrace technology with confidence, creativity, and care. Our curriculum equips children to navigate the digital world safely and thoughtfully, reflecting our commitment to nurturing well-rounded, happy learners who live out our Christian values every day.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the exciting world of computing as part of your child’s learning journey at Radwinter CofE Primary School.
