Sustainability
At Radwinter, we recognise our responsibility to nurture not only the minds and hearts of our children but also the world they will inherit. Our approach to sustainability is deeply rooted in our Christian vision of “growing and learning together to embrace life in all its fullness” (John 10:10). This means fostering a caring, respectful attitude towards the environment and encouraging our children to develop a strong connection with the natural world.
Our Commitment to Sustainability and Climate Action
We actively promote sustainability through practical steps that reflect our values of kindness, respect, and service. These include:
- Eco Council: Our Eco Council, composed of children from different year groups, plays a vital role in leading sustainability initiatives across the school. They meet regularly to discuss environmental issues, plan projects, and raise awareness among their peers, empowering our children to take ownership of protecting the planet.
- Refill Station Sessions: To reduce single-use plastic waste, we run regular refill station sessions where children and staff can refill water bottles. These sessions encourage sustainable habits and help embed the importance of reducing plastic consumption in everyday life.
- Natural habitats: Our school grounds include a natural meadow, specially maintained to support pollinators and encourage insect activity. This provides a living classroom where children can observe and learn about biodiversity firsthand.
- Outdoor learning: Through our Forest School programme, children build meaningful connections with the outdoors. This hands-on approach nurtures their curiosity, wellbeing, and respect for nature.
- Recycling initiatives: We recycle as much as possible, including food waste, ensuring that our school community minimises its environmental footprint.
Looking ahead, we are developing a comprehensive Sustainability and Climate Plan, which will be shared with parents and the wider community by September 2025. This plan will outline our future goals and strategies to embed sustainable practises across all aspects of school life.
Reflecting Our Vision and Values Through Sustainability
Our sustainability efforts embody the Christian values that underpin our school community:
- Fairness and respect: Teaching children to care for the environment instils a sense of responsibility and stewardship for God’s creation.
- Kindness and service: Encouraging active participation in sustainability projects helps children learn the importance of serving their community and the planet.
- Wisdom and hope: By understanding environmental challenges and taking positive action, our children develop hope for a healthier, more sustainable future.
Getting Involved
We warmly invite parents and community members to engage with our sustainability initiatives. Whether through volunteering in outdoor activities, supporting our refill station or simply encouraging your child’s curiosity about the natural world, your involvement enriches our shared mission.
Together, we can ensure that our children not only flourish academically and spiritually but also grow into thoughtful, compassionate guardians of the environment.
